Car Theft Prevention Tips

In 2015, a total of 14,859 motor vehicle thefts were reported by law enforcement agencies in Colorado. This is a 29.67% increase in motor vehicle thefts from 2014.

Having your car stolen is a frustrating and upsetting experience. If and when it’s recovered, usually there are repairs that need done, lots of paperwork to file, and even though insurance covers the damage and loss, it is an easy thing to deal with. Fortunately, there are small steps that can be taken to help avoid having your car stolen.

Keep Your Car Keys With You

First of all, never leave your keys in your vehicle, especially never leave your vehicle running while unattended. These may seem obvious, but how often have you started your car to let it warm up then gone back inside to finish getting ready for work?

Remove Your Stereo If Possible

If you have a removable stereo, remove it EVERY time you park the vehicle. Furthermore, don’t put stickers on your vehicle that identify specialty equipment you have installed, such as stereos or high performance parts. This alerts thieves to good reasons to steal your car over somebody else’s. On the same note, always keep valuables out of sight, or preferably, out of the car.

Use A Car Theft Deterrent Device

Also, use a deterrent on your car, such as “The Club” or “Lo-Jack”(and DO put Lo-Jack stickers on your windows). These devices won’t stop professional thieves from taking your car, but they will discourage them from trying. Similarly, if you have an alarm system on your vehicle, turn it on every time you park. If you can’t afford an alarm, install a dummy blinking LED light on your dash and turn it on every time you’re parked. If you can, it also helps to have your vehicle’s VIN number etched onto all the windows of your car.

Park In Well Lit Areas

And finally, when you’re choosing a parking spot, always look for well-lit, occupied areas (preferably close to entrances); keep your windows, doors, and sunroof closed and locked; and turn your wheels all the way to one side before locking your steering wheel to prevent towing.
