Given that your steering wheel is functionally a conduit between the road and your car, the first indication that something could be amiss with your vehicle can often come in the form of a shaky steering wheel. Here are a few reasons that this might happen:
Brakes – If your brakes’ rotors are warped or wearing out, your steering wheel will begin to vibrate. The worse their condition gets, the more violent the shaking will become and the more urgent it becomes to have your brakes serviced by a professional mechanic.
Tires – Given that your steering wheel literally directs your wheels, if they’re off-kilter in any way, shape or form, you’ll notice it via your steering system. This issue will be more noticeable at higher speeds initially but will get worse in a hurry if you don’t get a re-alignment. Tires being under or overinflated can also cause steering wheel vibrations under certain circumstances.
Engine – Problems with your engine that can lead to steering wheel shakes include air induction, fuel delivery or issues pertaining to the ignition process. You will likely feel these effects throughout your vehicle but they will tend to start with your steering system.
Axle – Damage from an impact of any kind that affects your axle will be felt in your steering system very quickly. If you feel your steering wheel being pulled to the right or the left dramatically while driving, there’s a good chance your driveshaft has been damaged and you should head to a garage ASAP.
