Spring means pothole season! All of the freezing and thawing can cause tiny cracks in the road to become big holes that jolt your car around and make for an uncomfortable ride.
But potholes mean more than just a bumpy ride. Hitting a pothole can cause your wheels to be out of alignment!
When that happens, it’s more than just dealing with a steering wheel that pulls to one side. Wheels that are out of alignment also make your tires wear unevenly, meaning they’ll need to be replaced prematurely – costing you money!
What’s more, hitting a pothole (especially at higher speeds) can mean damaging the wheel and suspension!
So how do you avoid these expensive problems in a season when the road is full of so many hazards?
The danger of potholes increases the faster you’re going. If you’re on a street that is torn up after a long winter, drive defensively. Driving slower will mean you can spot potholes much more easily and take care to avoid them.
If a pothole is unavoidable, avoid the impulse to swerve. Swerving can put you into a different lane and risk an accident, and if you still hit the pothole, you’ll now do so at an angle and risk more severe damage.
After you hit a pothole, it’s a good idea to have your tire, wheel, suspension and alignment inspected right away – stop by our auto shop in Aurora to have our ASE-Certified technicians perform an inspection. This will help you avoid tire wear that causes you to prematurely have to replace tires.
